These free quizzes mirror the Learn curriculum already on FanSion Sports. Each spot-check pairs with a guide. No invented plays — only the board language from the film room.

How scoring works

The scoreboard only needs a few numbers. A touchdown is worth 6 points. After every touchdown, the scoring team gets one extra play from close range: a kick for 1 point (the PAT), or a two-point conversion for 2. A field goal is 3 points when a drive stalls in range. A safety is 2 points for the defense when the offense is tackled in its own end zone — not a touchback. Ask: is this drive hunting seven, settling for three, or protecting a lead? Guide: How scoring works — touchdowns, kicks, safeties, scoreboard math.

Common penalties

Yellow flags aren’t random. The ones you’ll hear most Sundays: false start (offense moves early — usually 5 yards), offside / neutral zone (“defense jumped”), holding that restricts a player (offensive holding is the classic drive-killer), pass interference that hinders a catch chance, and roughing the passer after the throw. Don’t memorize every signal — ask who was restricted and whether it changed the play’s result. Guide: Common penalties.

Know the roles (positions)

No player names — just who does what. Three units share one field. Offense starts with the ball and tries to move it toward the end zone. Defense tries to stop, strip, and take it back. Special teams handle kicks, punts, and returns. Follow the Positions path (offense → defense → special teams → quiz) for a calm order, or browse one unit. Guide: Learn the Positions — who does what, no player names.

Downs & distance

Every play starts with a down and a distance. 1st-and-10 unlocks the broadcast. A down is one play attempt. The offense usually gets four chances to advance about ten yards; make it and you earn a new first down. The first number is which try; the second is yards still needed (so 2nd-and-6 means second try, six yards to go). The line to gain is the invisible mark you must reach. On fourth down you often punt, try a field goal, or go for it — miss the line to gain and it is a turnover on downs. Guide: Downs & distance.

Coverage basics

Coverage is the defensive picture behind a pass play. Zone means defenders guard an area of grass; man means a defender matches a receiver person-to-person. Cover 2: two deep safeties split the deep field. Cover 3: three deep (two corners and a free safety) with linebackers underneath — common on early downs. Man: stick to a person, often with one free safety high. Before the snap, count deep defenders — two high often Cover 2, three deep often Cover 3. Cover 4 (quarters) puts four deep and steals bombs. Guide: Coverage 101 — Cover 2, Cover 3, man, TV talk.

Route shapes

The Route Tree is the map of how receivers run — tap a branch, learn the name, then quiz yourself. Teams number routes differently; this is a clear fan version of the classic tree with the same ideas you’ll hear on TV. Go / fade races straight downfield. Slant takes an inside angle across the defender’s face. Post cuts toward the goal posts deep; corner angles to the deep sideline. Curl / hitch runs up, then stops and turns back to the QB. Drag crosses shallow under the linebackers. Pairs with the Route Tree trainer. Guide: Route Tree.
