Special teams
Kickoffs, punts, and field goals - the plays that move the ball without a normal snap-to-snap drive. Diagram first - then plain language.
Kickoff - start and reset
Game start button. Or the reset after most scores. The kicking team covers; the return team blocks lanes. Touchback is safe. A return can flip the map. Field position after a kickoff can handcuff a whole drive.
Punt - fourth-down field flip
On fourth down, kick the ball away so the other team starts farther back. Distance is cool. Hang time is the real flex - it lets gunners arrive and kill the return. A great punt pins the other team deep.
Field goal - 3 points (or the extra point)
Placekick through the uprights. Three points when a drive stalls in range. Or the extra point after a touchdown. Snap, hold, kick. One late rush or a bad snap and the points vanish.
Jobs on the unit
Returner - catch or fair-catch the kick, then decide kneel, fair-catch energy, or go. Gunner - races the sideline on punts to arrive with the ball. Coverage - the rest of the kicking team sprinting in lanes to tackle or force a fair catch.
Hidden yards
Special teams doesn’t always show up as a touchdown. Starting a drive on your 40 instead of your 20 is free field. That’s hidden yards: field position won (or lost) on kicks, not on a normal offensive play.
Analyst frame
When you watch, ask: did this kick help or hurt the next drive? Hang time, placement, and where the return starts matter as much as the scoreboard.
Kickoff starts the half. Punt flips the field. Field goal is 3. Coverage and gunners win the hidden yards.
